1. So, who are you guys, and what exactly do you do on SpongeBob?

Luke Brookshier:

We help create the story in a Spongebob episode.

Nate Cash:

We’re basically turning a ‘word’ story into a ‘picture’ story. When we’re doing our job right, the jokes are the type that aren’t as funny when you describe them.

2. What path did you take to becoming storyboard directors?

Luke:

After art school I worked in various positions in animation. Design, animation, and storyboarding. It was after working on a pilot at Nickelodeon that I was hired to work on SpongeBob.

Nate:

I waited outside the building until they opened the door for Luke… then I just ran like hell past security.

3. You wrote/directed “Truth or Squared”. What was it like to write the big tenth anniversary episode?

Nate:

Sacred.

Luke:

It was quite a challenge, not only because it was the tenth anniversary but also it’s a much longer episode.

4. This episode obviously went through a lot of writing and revisions, as it’s the official celebration of ten years worth of SpongeBob cartoons. How was this writing process different, and how did it affect you two?

Luke:

There were many more elements in this episode than in most Spongebob stories. The tenth anniversary episode is a parody of what is called a ‘clip’ show. Other television programs in the past show clips of previous episodes. For the Spongebob anniversary we wanted the same feel of a clip show but all of the clips Spongebob and the others “remember” are new and never before shown.

5. There are a lot of questions raised in this episode. Some are answered, and some of these answers in turn raise new questions. However, many of these new questions go unanswered. What was your favorite surprise revelation from “Truth or Squared”?

Luke:

The marriage of Sandy and Spongebob.

Nate:

SpongeBob sucked Krabby Patties through his umbilical cord.

6. What is one thing you think that SpongeBob fans should know from these past ten years, but they don’t?

Nate:

How to pick up chicks.

Luke:

Squidward is really an octopus.

7. If you could give SpongeBob one piece of advice, what would it be?

Luke:

Lay off the Krabby Patties! They’re bad for your cholesterol!

8. Can you give us a sneak peek at the twentieth anniversary episode?

Luke:

No.

Nate:

No.
